How do I design a logo?
When I meet with someone who needs a logo there are a few questions that need to be answered to help in the design process.
First things first… The name of the Company….
If your company name does not lend itself to the type of business, you may need a tag line. This helps the customer understand what kind of business or services you offer and later on when they are looking at your business card they will recognize you even if they have long forgotten your name…
Next is the Message you want to convey…
Who is your target audience? What type of image do you want to portray?
Do you want to have a conservative, corporate look, clever, fun look, stylish trendy look, or perhaps a classic traditional look…?
Whatever image you want to convey, we can achieve it with a professional design.
If you have seen a card style or look that appeals to you bring it in so we can get a feel for your likes & dislikes. Sketch something out if you have an idea and don’t know how to explain it… a picture is worth a thousand words 🙂
Does your company have a color scheme? Are they your favorite colors, or should it fit into the mode of your business?
For instance… if you are in the landscaping or environmental field, perhaps you would consider earth tones… you certainly aren’t limited but it is a starting point. Remember that you might have a “Favorite font” or “Favorite color” but it might not convey the image that you are looking for, we can help you determine that or work out a way to use it to compliment the design without overpowering it.
Key point… you want to create an image that is memorable. If your logo is easily identifiable, it will stand out.
How does your design fit in with your usage? For example, do you need something that will work for a lot of applications? As always Vector art is the optimum format to ensure the highest quality output.
Will your logo be used on one of the following:
A Website &/or Mobile Website? This will help determine layout & formats that work best.
In print on business cards, brochures, letterhead, envelopes, pocket folders?
Signage or Banners?
On embroidery for uniforms, etc?
Screen printed on your product or printed on packaging?
Some of these applications require a degree of simplicity so that nothing is lost in the process.
We can help you determine a good design approach to meet your needs.
Budget….
Budget will also determine the complexity of your logo. And how much time & detail can be spent.
Consider use of color in your logo, keeping in mind that each process it is used in will most likely share in the expense of printing it. You certainly don’t need full color to make a statement. Simple is good, and as my design teacher always told me the design should look good in black in white, if it does the addition of color will only improve it.
As a professional graphic designer, it’s very exciting and inspiring to have the opportunity to create your logo. To brainstorm, learn about your business, your services & your audience. To deliver a product that tells your story.
